Down the Tygart Valley River, below the Hell’s Gate and Devil’s Den rock formations near Arden, is the picturesque Moats Falls in Moatsville.  The falls are part of the larger Big Cove Run of the Tygart Valley River.  The Moats Falls offers a Class III white-water flow, complete with a 10-foot drop, providing an adrenaline-charged river-run for kayaking enthusiasts.

A special treat for any visitor to the falls is the opportunity to venture out on the natural rock bridge and experience the exhilaration of the fast moving river, and perhaps watch a kayaker pass by.  The bridge is an incredibly scenic spot for snapshots – one to keep in mind for high school senior portraits, engagement photos and wedding party vignettes.  In the nearby calmer waters, anglers can drop or cast their lines in for some trout, walleye, or catfish.

The Moats Falls are surrounded by beautiful forested woodlands offering an abundance of scenic adventures.  Walkers, hikers, runners, and bikers can enjoy a multitude of off-road trails and paths to follow and explore, either along the river, or deeper into the forest.  Birding enthusiasts won’t be disappointed when observing the forest, or the river, and might just catch a glimpse of the Northern Cardinal, our state bird.
